AYRSHIRE COLLEGE

  • DESIGNS FOR THE EXTERNAL WORKS AND PUBLIC REALM ASSOCIATED WITH A NEW £40M COLLEGE ON THE SITE OF THE FORMER DIAGIO BOTTLING PLANT.
  • The site sits on the high ground on Hill Street above Kilmarnock town centre adjacent to the railway station. As a significant major development within the town, accessibility and visibility were a key client requirement in overcoming awkward changes in level.

The key landscape benefit was to create a landscape that functioned seamlessly with both the building and external circulation on a tight site, providing a contemporary and dynamic civic impact when viewed from the Hill Street approaches whilst creating an attractive and inviting series of social spaces for all users of the college. The Hill Street frontage significantly increased the college's public realm and seamlessly integrated it into the surrounding neighbourhood. A welcoming campus environment was provided which contained visual impact yet was legible to use when approached from all directions. The landscape had initial, instant impact, but also one that would develop and mature over time.
