BEACON BUILDING STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY

  • THIS GENERAL TEACHING BLOCK FOR STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY, CHRISTENED THE BEACON, IS LOCATED AT THE HEART OF THE COLLEGE ROAD CAMPUS AT STOKE-ON-TRENT. IT IS PART OF A WIDER UNIVERSITY ESTATES STRATEGY TO PROVIDE EXCELLENT TEACHING AND LEARNING FACILITIES AND THE BEST POSSIBLE STUDENT EXPERIENCE.

  • The University was keen to continue its philosophy of simple form, metal clad new-builds. Following on from a recently completed, bronze clad building, the Beacon is clad in an aluminium rain screen cassette panel employing a number of different surface finishes.  This gives the building its animated façade that changes throughout the day with the variance of light and sunshine.

The building provides general teaching accommodation, IT labs and a lecture theatre. It is not dedicated to any particular faculty, but provides shared facilities. There is also a café that looks out on to College Road and is very much part of the public realm.

  • The University has a number of highly recognised degrees in the visual arts and there has been a significant amount of investment in IT and the audio and visual fit out of the building.

The layout of the building allows flexibility in the way spaces are used and, together with the way in which the university sees learning in the future, provides an exciting and excellent new facility.
