SITUATED IN THE NORTH EAST CORNER THE BESWICK COMMUNITY HUB MASTERPLAN, CONNELL SIXTH FORM COLLEGE IS A 600 PLACE SIXTH FORM COLLEGE FOR 16-19 YEAR OLDS. THE COLLEGE SERVES THE NEEDS AND ASPIRATIONS OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY IN EAST MANCHESTER. IT IS RUN BY THE BRIGHT FUTURES EDUCATIONAL TRUST.
The project includes 60 car parking spaces, including visitor and disabled parking and new public transport links will serve the college.
The 5050m2 plan compromises two, three storey double banked rectangular blocks beside a central top lit ‘street’. High level walkways connect the blocks. Upon entry the three storey ‘street’ offers views to the gardens at the rear whilst glazed internal screens allow views into the accommodation along the active edges.
The building is part of the Beswick Community Hub, a significant new phase in the continuing development of East Manchester. AHR has played a key part in this transformation, creating a new ‘place’ for the community by delivering buildings and spaces designed with a collective geometry that unites them as a whole. AHR also designed and delivered Manchester Institute of Health & Performance and East Manchester Leisure Centre as part of this wider development.
