CUMBRIA COUNTY COUNCIL OFFICES

  • AHR DELIVERED THE DESIGN FOR A NEW PURPOSE-BUILT HEADQUARTERS IN CARLISLE FOR CUMBRIA COUNTY COUNCIL. THE NEW HEADQUARTERS FEATURES 450 WORKSTATIONS AND ACCOMMODATES AROUND 700 STAFF, WHO HAVE RELOCATED FROM COUNTY COUNCIL'S PREVIOUS BASE AT THE COURTS AND OTHER OFFICES. THE DEVELOPMENT AIMS TO REJUVENATE THE AREA, TRANSFORMING A MAJOR GATEWAY INTO THE CITY CENTRE.

  • The building is separated into two functions; the front of the building is a two store block that houses public functions, whilst the four storey block at the rear of the building contains private open plan work areas arranged around a central atrium. Careful consideration was given in this design to ensure that surrounding conservation areas were not impacted.

  • The building is designed as a mixed mode building utilising a mix of natural ventilation for the majority of the year. This is backed up by active chilled beams to deal with the climatic extremes of the year, whilst maintaining the internal environment within the recommendations of the British Council for Offices. The new office is designed with the use of natural stone, glass and traditional brick along with photovoltaic solar panels on top of the building, in order to cut the council’s carbon output by nearly half, from 1,546 tonnes to 826 tonnes.
