DUBAI PUBLIC REALM

  • IN ADVANCE OF DUBAI’S SUCCESSFUL BID TO HOST THE WORLD EXPO 2020, AHR WAS ENGAGED ON BEHALF OF DUBAI’S ROAD AND TRANSPORT AUTHORITY (RTA) TO CREATE A CONCEPT VISION AND DESIGN FOR 3 PRIMARY ROAD CORRIDORS ALONG THE CITY’S COASTAL EDGE SOUTH WEST OF THE CITY CENTRE.
  • With a cumulative total of 30km, 2nd December Street, Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Beach Road were seen as the catalyst streets to regenerate the traditional part of the city. The project was instigated by His Highness Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and constitutional monarch of Dubai to consider options to improve the transportation network and provide urban design solutions.

Our solution drew inspiration from Dubai’s past in order to view Dubai’s future using a hierarchy of differing scaled interventions integrated into a strategic, holistic approach to benefit the city as a whole, and local neighbourhoods. It presented the world’s longest cable car enabling views toward the man-made off-shore islands and also inland to the iconic Dubai skyline. This formed part of a fully integrated multi modal transport network which accommodated and facilitated pedestrian, bicycle, public transport and private connectivity. The scheme developed a contextually responsive masterplan focusing on urban design and planning principles for the public and semi-private open spaces. This macro to micro scaled approach reconciled the big picture by creating a ‘wow’ factor whilst enabling a platform for local neighbourhood regeneration through additional footfall revenue. These improvements, which also constituted public realm plazas and pocket parks, were serviced with a suite of public realm elements such as street furniture, bus and tram shelters, lighting elements, shading devices, signage & wayfinding, water features, public art and planting which collectively have the potential to transform the area into an iconic destination for the visitor and a vastly improved neighbourhood for the resident.
