FUTURE OF CONSTRUCTION

  • THE FUTURE CONSTRUCTION DEMONSTRATOR WAS DEVELOPED FOR THE FRAUNHOFER INSTITUTE FOR WORKPLACE ORGANIZATION IAO AS AN INTERACTIVE SYSTEM DESIGNED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CONCEPT OF DEPENDENCIES IN THE DESIGN AND PLANNING OF BUILDINGS FOR THE JOINED RESEARCH PROJECTS FUTURE CONSTRUCTION.
  • One of the principal ideas behind the demonstrator was to combine the algorithmic approach of the Computational Design Research group with the Virtual Reality system of IAO. In contrast to other participatory VR systems, the emphasis in this case was not on presenting the end user with a finished building proposal that they could respond to, but rather to include any stakeholder in the negotiation between various aspects of the building while still on a fairly diagrammatic level.

The application is constructed in three parts and applied to a lab building typology using a private research institution program in Germany as a test case. Each part dealt with adjacent concerns in the design process namely, site massing and envelope design; circulation and common areas; workspaces and structure resulting in an interactive investigation addressing both concerns and their interdependence.
