HAYMARKET INTERCHANGE

  • THE PRACTICE WAS APPOINTED TO INVESTIGATE HOW A PROPOSED TRAM STOP COULD BE INTEGRATED AT HAYMARKET TO PROVIDE A FUNCTIONAL INTERCHANGE THAT COULD INCORPORATE INTO A WIDER MASTERPLAN FOR THE AREA.
  • The existing railway station was already operating beyond capacity and the building and bridge unit were heavily congested with no disabled access down to platform level. The scheme proposed to re-define Haymarket as a proper urban space with new development repairing previously eroded site edges. Within this a dynamic concourse roof expresses arrival, establishes routes through the interchange into the City and provides a maximum of flexible development area below in the tradition of great Victorian terminus.

Inside the concourse, the roof structure aids way-finding and there is a direct line of sight from the top of the platform escalators to bus stops, tram stop, taxi rank, and onward pedestrian routes to the City Centre.
