AHR WAS COMMISSIONED TO CREATE 2D CAD DRAWINGS OF THE FLOORS, ELEVATION, SECTIONS AND ROOF OF THE HISTORIC GRADE I LISTED, MEDIEVAL CATHEDRAL. IN ORDER TO DELIVER THIS, OUR GEOMATICS TEAM REQUIRED MORE THAN JUST THE TRADITIONAL METHOD OF SURVEYING
Due to the listed nature and the ornate gothic architecture of the building, along with the issues surrounding access at the historic site, our geomatics team used cutting edge drone technology, combined with the use of state-of-the-art laser scanners to capture every detail of the decorative cathedral.
Drone technology enabled our Geomatics team to obtain high definition, 4K images of the Chapter House and the Library; taken well above the human eye-line in order to combat the shadow edge which is associated with the angle of observation. This information, together with the data collected from the laser scanners, allowed the team to create detailed and accurate records from the curvature and decorative detailing of the structure. This level of detail would have been much more difficult, if not impossible, to obtain through more traditional surveying methods.
We extracted plans, elevations and sections from the data set, in order that the Cathedral could store a conservation record of the building’s structure and contents. It will be used to enable the Cathedral to pin-point any defects with the building that may need addressing as part of any future maintenance or development plans, particularly to the stone work.
Due to the dimensional parameters set by the laser scans, it was also possible to create a 3D roof and terrain model from the drone photography.
