MASDAR MIST NEIGHBOURHOOD

  • MASDAR CITY VISION IS GROUND BREAKING IN ADDRESSING SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS OF THE 21ST CENTURY HEAD-ON AND WILL CONSIST OF A HOTEL, COMMERCIAL, RESIDENTIAL, RETAIL AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENTS.
  • In its vision, Masdar sets the foundations of a new industry and skill base to lead the way for the successful transition from an oilbased economy to a new energy economy based on intelligent resource utilization.

The Masdar Institute of Science & Technology (MI) is situated in Masdar City. It will be the first neighbourhood representing the goals and the objectives of the Masdar City development. Masdar City is one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken in the world – to support its vision with design solutions AHR, along with our consultants, were appointed to provide both the technological innovation and outstanding organizational support needed to realize the Masdar City vision.
  • The Advanced Design Group undertook an analysis to provide precise measures in the case of regulated maximum walking distances and to give information of the accessibility of an area from other points in a building or urban context for each of the concept designs. The analysis methods used were part of ongoing research concerning paths and distances, developed in-house. The methods calculated and visualised minimum distances and paths within a building or urban environment.

We carried out an assessment of minimum walking distances to each of the amenities to determine whether additional facilities would be required. The site-wide accessibility studies were visualised as gradient colour fields for all the public spaces, allowing teams to make informed choices concerning circulation strategies.

As proposals became more concrete we modelled the circulation areas of each of the concept designs in 3D with stair cases and elevator shafts connecting them vertically. We modelled and understood the shortest route and metric walking distances from the entrance of each apartment to the nearest transport stop. Through interactive interfaces in the applications it was easy to test scenarios such as altering the transport placement or see the effect of temporary closure in the case of maintenance.
