AS PART OF A LARGER MASTERPLANNING PROJECT, THE PRACTICE HAS BEEN WORKING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM SINCE 2001, INCORPORATING RESIDENTIAL EN-SUITE ACCOMMODATION FOR 1260 STUDENTS, RETAIL AND LEISURE FACILITIES INCLUDING RESTAURANT, BARS AND GAMES FACILITIES.
The Mason Hall development includes 876 high quality contemporary student residences of varying storey heights. The design incorporates the redevelopment of the canal frontage, pedestrian and cycle routes to the main academic campus and extensive hard and soft landscaping with new student piazzas, lakes and water features.
The development is fully sympathetic to the existing registered landscape; enhancing and complimenting existing views, retaining the concept of the backdrop, whilst providing containment and allowing glimpses to and from the lake. The lake in the centre of the Vale provides the focus to our design and the ripples emanating from the lake form terraces and protected gardens within the landscape. This provides the opportunity to carefully blend the new development within the existing context.
