NATIONAL BROADCASTING CENTRE

  • IN 2000 AHR WAS APPOINTED BY BBC PROPERTY TO PREPARE A STRATEGIC BRIEF FOR BBC SCOTLAND’S PROPOSED NEW MULTIMEDIA NATIONAL BROADCASTING CENTRE AT PACIFIC QUAY IN GLASGOW. THIS COMMISSION INVOLVED CLOSE AND EXTENSIVE LIAISON WITH ALL GRADES OF MANAGEMENT AND STAFF WITHIN THE ORGANISATION TO DEFINE AND SCOPE THEIR REQUIREMENTS RESULTING IN PUBLICATION OF THE FINALISED BRIEF IN APRIL 2001. THIS BECAME THE BASIS OF AN INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTS’ COMPETITION WON BY DAVID CHIPPERFIELD IN 2002.
  • Physical surveys of existing premises in Edinburgh and Glasgow established the extent and nature of the present facilities which had been acquired and developed piecemeal since the 1930s. In parallel, time utilisation studies (TUS) confirmed early impressions of a low desk occupancy / highly mobile creative workforce. Some 30% of staff returned detailed questionnaires which correlated very closely with the observed TUS findings. Out of over 1200 staff, around 200 senior managers were interviewed and a number of staff workshops were held to establish the detailed work pattern for each business genre.

Under the leadership of a project director, and with the assistance of a workplace consultant, this commission was carried out by a team of up to six architects and assistants over an extended period of 15 months.
