OLDHAM COLLEGE

  • LOCATED TO THE NORTH-WEST OF OLDHAM TOWN CENTRE, THE NEW SUITE OF BUILDINGS AT OLDHAM COLLEGE WERE DESIGNED TO REFLECT MODERN METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION, HIGH LEVELS OF THERMAL AND ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE AND BE DESIGNED FOR A LONG LIFE WITH LOW LEVELS OF MAINTENANCE. CONCEIVED AS SIMPLE, ELEGANT, ORTHOGONAL AND WELL-PROPORTIONED BLOCKS, USING A SIMPLE AND ROBUST MATERIALS PALETTE OF NATURAL COLOURS.

  • For the first phase, the ‘Learning Hub’ included a five storey building with teaching spaces on all floors, together with arrival, reception, community spaces and student services on the ground floors.

The second building, the ‘Innovation Hub’ included a four storey building with a mixture of cellular classrooms and open plan teaching spaces distributed over four floors. A key driver within the brief was the creation of a light and airy atria space at the heart of the building to help the interrelationship between different subjects and increase space utilisation.

The third building, the ‘Creative Hub’ delivered the final tranche of new teaching accommodation over three storeys. The scheme included a mixture of general teaching accommodation and specialist rooms, designed to deliver vocational subjects such as hair & beauty courses and included a commercial salon.
  • The first two buildings developed on the campus utilised a Design for Manufacture & Assembly approach through the use of a prefabricated ‘off site’ concrete system for the main structure and external shell. This resulted in highly durable components of a higher quality and finish than many traditional construction methods.

The College’s facilities management staff were fully integrated into the design team and processes from the beginning of the project, which allowed proposed building solutions to be tested from the perspective of building management, maintenance, lifespan and disposal at an early stage.
