OSBORNE HOUSE, SWISS COTTAGE AND MUSEUM

  • AHR BUILDING CONSULTANCY IS APPOINTED TO ENGLISH HERITAGE’S FRAMEWORK FOR THE PROVISION OF METRIC SURVEY SERVICES, THROUGH WHICH WE WERE COMMISSIONED TO UNDERTAKE SURVEYS OF THE SWISS COTTAGE AND MUSEUM LOCATED WITHIN THE GROUNDS OF OSBORNE HOUSE ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT. THE SWISS COTTAGE IS A TWO STOREY BUILDING DATING FROM 1862 AND IS NOW A GRADE II LISTED BUILDING, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT FOR QUEEN VICTORIA’S CHILDREN.
  • Due to the listed nature of the building, English Heritage decided to survey the property through the use of terrestrial laser scanners. AHR Building Consultancy carried out topographical, measured building and underground utility mapping surveys, which were delivered in 3D AutoCAD format. Capturing the data in this manner allowed AHR to create a highly detailed as-built Building Information Model (BIM) of the property. This model can be used to extract plans, elevations and sections in 2D AutoCAD format.

Panoramic digital images were taken at each scan setup. These were combined with scan data to create an intelligent photographic record of the structure and its many valuable artefacts. This information was made available to English Heritage through the AHR Digital Portal, a viewer which allows the user not only access to the images but also allows the extraction of dimensional and volumetric information.

The final suite of information is to be used for a partial re-design of the grounds and a historical record of the buildings and contents.
