DESIGN COMPETITION FOR THE NEW MUSEUM OF MODERN ART IN WARSAW, POLAND. THROUGH THE SUCCESSFUL COLLABORATION OF TEAMS IN WARSAW, LONDON, LEEDS, AND BIRMINGHAM, A DESIGN FOR POLAND’S FIRST CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM WAS DEVELOPED.
Sited in the middle of Warsaw’s commercial centre, the museum will serve as a catalyst for the city’s engagement of contemporary art. A state-of-the-art exhibition facility for important shows, maximum interaction between the museum and the city, and space for experimentation were the three goals driving the design.
Each functional zone within the brief was planned as a defined volume within the final museum composition. Much of the building is elevated to allow existing pedestrian desire lines to pass through the site but also to retain a visual link between the new square being created in front of the Palace of Culture and the new city park being planned at the rear of the museum.
