  • At yesterday’s Topping Out Ceremony of Building C - the new £6M home to the Faculty of Retail and Commercial - College staff were invited to sign the last 60 bricks, to raise funds for local charity Dr Kershaw’s Hospice. Andrew Harrison, Vice Principal and Olson, Jacqueline Olson, Assistant Principal of the College have signed the first of the sixty bricks.

Today, the last 1m2 of brickwork above the student entrance (overlooking the courtyard) will be completed by two Level 1 brickwork learners, Damien Jackson and Alex Kerrigan. Building C has provided excellent work experience opportunities for these learners who are tutored by Paul Gorton.

Members of the project team including Willmott Dixon the local construction contractor, AHR the architect for the project, Mace the project management and cost consultants and Eric Wright FM are also making corporate donations to this worthwhile cause. Dr Kershaw’s Hospice is Oldham’s only specialist care facility for adults with life limiting illnesses and provides palliative care in a homely environment. Lisa Pearson of Dr Kershaw’s said: “We’re highly honoured that the proceeds from this very special topping out ceremony are going to come to Dr Kershaw’s Hospice. The Hospice enjoys a great relationship with Oldham College and are delighted to be part of this Milestone in the College’s history. I am also excited to be sponsoring a brick myself which I will be signing on behalf of Dr Kershaw’s Hospice so that our strong bond is further cemented.”

Building C will provide the College with commercial hair and beauty therapy facilities including dedicated spa, makeup and nail rooms which will be open to the paying public from after Easter 2015. In addition to this, there will be a number of hair, beauty and therapy learning environments including three hair salons and two beauty therapy rooms. The remainder of the building will be cross curriculum classrooms which will provide modern up-to-date teaching accommodation.
