UKHO HEADQUARTERS

  • AHR IS DELIVERING A NEW HEADQUARTERS FOR THE UNITED KINGDOM HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICE (UKHO). THEIR EXISTING ESTATE CONSISTS OF 14 SEPARATE BUILDINGS, SERVING A MIXTURE OF INDUSTRIAL AND OFFICE FUNCTIONS, WHICH ARE BETWEEN 45 AND 75 YEARS OLD. WE HAVE DESIGNED A SOLUTION THAT IS FAR MORE FLEXIBLE AND CONDUCIVE TO MODERN WORKING PRACTICES.

  • The new building, based on the concepts of contours and currents, will meet the needs of the business and enable them to sustain a working environment that is capable of delivering a world class service to both the Royal Navy and global commercial customers. Another key driver for the projects is to create an environment that supports the need to attract and retain a highly skilled workforce.

The project comprises the construction of new office accommodation of approximately 11,000 m2 in accordance with the British Council for Offices specification and to meet a BREEAM Excellent rating. Through an environmentally responsive strategy and innovative design approach we will reduce future costs for the client by minimising energy requirements in the new facilities.

The central atrium contains a feature stair that leads to wide bridges which provide access to the wings and breakout space. The bridges step diagonally across the section to create an unrestricted view upon entering the building.
  • The UKHO’s brief was to encourage a ‘one team’ approach, in contrast to their current cellular buildings. This has been achieved by arranging two wings either side of a central atrium. Open balconies and bridges create physical and visual connection between all parts of the building resulting in an impressive sense of openness for such a large facility.

The ground floor contains a meeting suite, training rooms, recreation and dining areas and administration offices. The upper floors are split into four open plan office spaces arranged around central core facilities.

In addition to the office there is a requirement for a separate security building and the provision of external landscaping, infrastructure and car parking.
