AHR BUILDING CONSULTANCY WAS COMMISSIONED TO PREPARE A SCHEME TO CONVERT THIS FORMER MILL BUILDING INTO AN ENTERPRISE AND INNOVATION CENTRE, PROVIDING ACCOMMODATION INCORPORATING 26 OFFICES AND 3 LABORATORIES FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM SIZE START-UP BUSINESSES.
The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre was awarded Best New Development by Huddersfield Civic Society at their Design Awards in 2013. The building visually enhances the vista along Firth Street and from the riverside. AHR Building Consultancy incorporated a contemporary glass and steel frame within the shell of a former stone built industrial building, effectively balancing the old with the new.
The refurbishment maximises the building’s unique location by creating views over the adjacent river and opening up the embankment to the public through the construction of a new walkway. The modern design and materials of the new extensions complement the existing stone building with their cubic forms and help to uplift the former mill into the 21st century.
The building achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.
