THE BOWER ASHTON CAMPUS IS HOME TO THE UWE'S DEPARTMENT OF CREATIVE INDUSTRIES. AHR PRODUCED THE DEVELOPMENT MASTERPLAN FOR THE SITE WHICH WAS GRANTED PLANNING APPROVAL. THE AHR DEVELOPED A LONG TERM RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNIVERSITY AND WE DELIVERED A NUMBER OF PROJECTS ACROSS THE CAMPUS.
AHR designed and delivered the Courtyard Infill project that enlarged the size of the library and refectory space in response to a 16% increase in students on the site. The design solution created additional floorspace by creating a mezzanine level in the central courtyard. This made it possible to increase the overall floor area whilst also creating additional learning settings with views into the new enclosed courtyard below.
The union bar staff recognised that the footfall into the existing spaces was lacking and the interior design of the spaces had limited appeal to students. Options which considered additional student social space were put forward and it was determined that connectivity was key to improving use of the facilities whilst creating a broader range of areas would also make it more attractive to a wider variety of students who wanted to be able to use the space to work as well as socialise.
Our solutions therefore considered how this central space could be filled in to link from the most informal environment of the union bar, through to an enlarged refectory type space and learning common which was used as a central link space.
New glazing also ensured an improved natural ventilation strategy could be adopted alongside enhancements to the artificial lighting within the library. The existing single glazing was upgraded and openings in the façade increased substantially to enable better ventilation. Our in house Scan to BIM team created a model from which the whole design team developed these proposals.
The courtyard area was transformed into a vibrant open plan student learning zone. As part of the Faculty of School of Creative Arts, the existing Drama School was also remodelled and improved.
AHR has continued to work with UWE across its other campuses including refurbishing and enhancing the teaching facilities and laboratories of Glenside Campus for The Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences, bringing together experts from Allied Health Professions, Biological, Biomedical and Analytical Sciences, Health and Social Science, and Nursing and Midwifery.
