THE PRACTICE WAS APPOINTED TO PREPARE THE CONCEPT MASTERPLAN AND SCHEME DESIGN FOR THE INCORPORATION OF CROSSRAIL’S PROPOSED £275M WHITECHAPEL STATION. THE AREA FORMS A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE STAGED ENTRY INTO LONDON FROM THE EAST.
Working closely with our Advanced Design Group, the proposals reflected a thorough analysis of key routes and pedestrian desire lines and how these can not only be restored and strengthened, but also utilised to open up further development opportunities across the site. The Advanced Design Group provided analysis of the four proposed designs focusing on two methods ‘Accessibility and Movement’ and ‘Visibility’.
The masterplan, new station, and their associated urban design interventions will form significant developments, not only in terms of their size, but also their contribution to the community acting as a further catalyst for development of the broader Whitechapel area.
The Whitechapel Station project comprises two 245m platform tunnels with associated shafts and interchanges with the East London Line and London Underground. It also includes a new combined London Underground / Crossrail ticket hall at grade level – the only stand-alone facility on all Crossrail’s central London stations. The new ticket hall is an iconic form which will become part of larger regeneration plans.
