THE ADVANCED IMAGING CENTRE WITHIN THE SIR GEORGE GILBERT SCOTT BUILDING AT LEEDS GENERAL INFIRMARY OFFERS A STATE-OF-THE-ART MRI FACILITY, THE DESIGN BALANCES THE RESEARCH NATURE OF THE NEW DEPARTMENT AGAINST THE TRADITIONAL GRADE I LISTED MANNER OF THE BUILDING.
The new reception area incorporates bulkhead lighting and acoustic rafts to provide the illusion of a reduced height ceiling, helping the space feel comforting and intimate by creating a more human scale environment for patients to wait in. Existing and new design elements have been brought together harmoniously in this space to not only enhance the existing features of the building but create an appropriately modern space in keeping with the function of the new suite.
A key decision was to emphasise the history of the building, retaining the height of the existing windows and ceilings, but introducing floating ceiling features that bring light, ventilation and acoustic measures in at a more efficient height. The design was kept clean and simple throughout, using a palette of white, grey and mustard highlight.
The design maintains and enhances the existing architectural features throughout as far as possible, whilst also seeking to showcase the new hyperpolarisation technology of the suite in anticipation of professional visitors with a medical background.
