The new entrance relieves passenger congestion at the existing ticket barrier line and saves commuters to the south of the city up to an hour of travel time each week.
AHR led the design development of the iconic new entrance after being appointed by Carillion at the Governance for Railway Investment Projects detailed design stage (GRIP5), following on from its work on the Leeds Station masterplan.
At the outset our building consultants carried out a point cloud survey of the existing building and station infrastructure to allow a highly accurate BIM model of the scheme to be built. This was followed by a surface curvature analysis of the building’s geometrically complex design to identify the most efficient shape of the external skin. Along with the rest of the design team, they were then able to rationalise the structure and design a profile that could be repeated, reducing the fabrication time and cost. All this was tested using state of the art parametric modelling.
