THIS £35M FLAGSHIP CAMPUS PROJECT COMPRISES OF A RAIL OPERATING CENTRE (ROC) AND A TRAINING CENTRE (TC). THE ROC IS THE LARGEST OF 12 CENTRES ACROSS THE UK AND WILL CONTROL ALL RAIL OPERATIONS ON THE EAST COAST MAIN LINE BETWEEN LONDON AND SCOTLAND. THE TC IS ONE OF 2 LARGER NATIONAL CENTRES PROVIDING A STATE-OF-THE-ART LEARNING ENVIRONMENT DESIGNED TO MEET THE CHALLENGES OF RUNNING A MODERN RAIL SYSTEM.
Immediately next to York’s Grade II* Station and adjacent the City Conservation Area, securing a meaningful and deliverable Planning Consent was top priority and strategic project risk for Network Rail. Working closely with City of York Planning & Regeneration and English Heritage, and in consultation with York Civic Trust and York’s Conservation Area Advisor Panel, the Practice developed a design that draws upon the themes of historic railway architecture in a contemporary manner, whilst faithfully respecting the operational needs and functions of the brief.
